The summer externship program is a vital component of the Institute’s program. After the first year of law school, Urban Morgan Fellows and other law students interested in international law and human rights are given the opportunity to spend the summer working with human rights organizations, international judges, human rights attorneys, governmental agencies, or UN bodies through a summer externship. The externship program provides invaluable hands-on training for the student and much needed assistance to the host organization.
Subject to funding limitations, the Urban Morgan Institute works to find placements for all interested students, both fellows and HRQ staff members, and provides a stipend to cover airfare and modest living arrangements. In conjunction with the Summer Public Interest Fellowship program, most students have been able to be obtain funding for a summer externship. Placements are based on availability, taking into consideration the student’s interest in particular issues, foreign language abilities, and geographic preferences.
