Interest in Mental Health and Public Interest Law
Katherine (Katie) Porter obtained a B.S. degree in both Psychology and Political Science from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. While at Xavier, Katie completed the University Scholars honors program and was inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu, the national honor society of Jesuit institutions; Mortar Board, the senior national honor society; and Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology. In addition to her Juris Doctorate studies at the University of Cincinnati, she is studying for the Master of Social Work joint degree.
Katie knew from teaching experiences with the Caledonian School in the Czech Republic and the Aston English School in China that she enjoys working with children. But it was her work in Cincinnati as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for ProKids and a case manager for Lighthouse Youth Services that affirmed her interest in social work as it relates to children. In the summer of 2010, Katie worked for ProKids as a Summer Public Interest Fellow. She expects the Weaver Fellowship to not only complement her law and social work studies, but prepare her to improve the lives of underprivileged and behaviorally challenged youth.
