Tax Law

Tax considerations underlie most transactions and disputes that lawyers confront in practice and, therefore, it is important for all lawyers to gain a basic understanding of this topic. Some students may wish to make tax matters a focus of their professional practice. Tax lawyers engage in counseling clients about structuring deals, advising family-owned businesses on succession planning, and representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service, among other issues. In fact, many lawyers help businesses and individuals comply with complex tax laws and get involved when tax issues require litigation. The basic course in this area is Federal Income Tax.
