Celebrate Open Access Week with Us!

Open Access Week display featuring open education resources and reasons why open access is needed

Open Access Week 2025 is an opportunity to join together, take action, and raise awareness around the importance of community control of knowledge sharing systems. This year’s theme is "Who Owns Our Knowledge?” The "2025 theme asks a pointed question about the present moment and how, in a time of disruption, communities can reassert control over the knowledge they produce. It also challenges us to reflect on not only who has access to education and research but on how knowledge is created and shared, where it has come from, and whose voices are recognized and valued." Read more about the Open Access Week 2025 theme

Copyright Law (Conceptes & Insights)

  • Available through the West Academic study aid subscription, this text provides an exploration of the doctrinal and policy issues in American copyright law. It covers every major topic in basic copyright courses: the history of copyright; subject matter, including original works of authorship and artificial intelligence; ownership, including works made for hire, transfers of ownership and termination of transfers; duration and formalities; exclusive rights, including their transposition to the digital environment; fair use, including the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision in Andy Warhol Foundation v. Goldsmith, and the operation of fair use in the digital and AI environments; secondary liability, both at common law and as developed through application of the DMCA to Internet service providers; enforcement, including “paracopyright” protections against circumvention of technological protection measures and for copyright management information; Federal preemption of state law, including with respect to mass market “browsewrap” licenses.

Copyright Examples & Explanations

  • Available through the Aspen Learning Library subscription, this study aid provides an overview of Copyright Law, together with examples that illustrate how these principles apply in typical cases. Discussions of issues include whether artists have copyright in their performances, first sale of digital works, copying of information from famous news photographs, copyright of works in virtual worlds, fair use of appropriation art, news clippings services, Google Books, course pack, secondary liability of BitTorrent and YouTube, and reasonable royalty damages. A series of problems at the end of each section or chapter assist you in testing your understanding. Answers are provided for these problems.

Understanding Copyright Law

  • Available through the LexisNexis Digital Library study aid subscription, Understanding Copyright Law reflects the substantial developing case law and legislative developments that have taken place since 2019, including an analysis of the eagerly awaited fair use decisions of Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. and Andy Warhol Foundation v. Goldsmith, which marked the first time in several decades that the Court has ruled on this "thorniest" issue of copyright law. Other case law developments are also included, such as the challenges brought about by generative artificial intelligence and other digital technologies. As always, Congress continues to change the face of copyright law, and this edition includes an overview of the Copyright Alternative in Small-Claims Enforcement Act of 2020 (the CASE Act), which establishes a small claims court-type system within the United States Copyright Office.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Begun in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, it is a Day of Unity to connect battered women’s advocates across the country. In 1989 Congress passed Public Law 101-112 declaring the month of October to be Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month's theme is "With Survivors, Always."

Risk factors specific to each type of family violence are identified. Assessment and treatment guidelines are offered, including a discussion of therapy for memory of trauma in adult survivors of childhood maltreatment.
