Filing the FAFSA
Applying for Federal Student Aid
Law students planning to use federal student loans to help cover the cost of their legal education must first complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This single application determines eligibility for federal, state, and institutional grants, work-study, and loans.
How to Apply
- Complete the FAFSA online for a quick, secure process that checks for errors.
- List the University of Cincinnati (Title IV Code: 003125) so the Student Financial Aid Office (SFAO) receives your information electronically.
- File your FAFSA by March 1 each year for priority consideration.
- Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import your tax information.
- Sign your FAFSA electronically using your FSA ID, which you’ll also use for student loan processes.
After You Apply
- The U.S. Department of Education sends your FAFSA results to the University of Cincinnati's Student Financial Aid Office.
- Following admission to the College of Law, the SFAO begins preparing financial aid offers as early as February or March.
- Once your award is ready, you’ll receive an email at your UC address with instructions to view your offer online.
- After confirming your enrollment at Cincinnati Law, review your award in Catalyst under "My Finances", and accept or decline each type of aid. You can also specify the amount you wish to borrow.
Important Note
The University of Cincinnati College of Law is responsible only for processing law student scholarships and fellowship awards. All federal financial aid loan processing is managed centrally by the University of Cincinnati's Student Financial Aid Office.
