American Inn of Court

Each year, a limited number of third-year students have the opportunity to participate in an American Inn of Court. The Inn of Court program for Cincinnati, the Potter Stewart Inn of Court, was organized under the direction of the late Carl B. Rubin, United States District Judge for the Southern District of Ohio, and a graduate of the UC College of Law. The general objective of the program is to enhance the professional and ethical quality of legal advocacy by the bar.

The Inn of Court is composed of Cincinnati-area federal and state court judges, experienced trial lawyers, less experienced attorneys, law professors, and law students, and meets eight times during the school year on a monthly basis. The members of the Inn are divided into small groups, called pupilage groups, with each group composed of a judge and a representative of each of the various levels of legal experience of the members. Each monthly meeting begins with hors d'oeurvre followed by a presentation on some aspect of legal advocacy by one of the pupilage groups.

This program provides a unique opportunity to develop trial advocacy skills through close association with extremely knowledgeable and experienced practitioners. It also provides the students with the opportunity to network with local attorneys and judges.
