Student Prizes

First-Year Prizes

Ernest Karam Book Award

Established in 1992, this prize provides the book awards to the first‐year students with high academic achievement.  This prize is awarded to the student achieving the highest class rank in each first‐year section at the end of the spring semester and to the student selected by the Advocacy instructors as the outstanding writer in each section.   

Gustavus Henry Wald Memorial Prize for Contracts

This prize was established by Mrs. Betty Wald and Richard H. Wald in memory of Gustavus Henry Wald, who served as Dean of the College of Law (1900‐ 1902).  The prize is awarded to the student who attains the highest grade in Contracts.   

Henry A. Morrill Constitutional Law Prize

This prize was established by Albert H. Morrill in memory of his father, who for many years was professor of Constitutional Law in the College.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who writes the best examination in constitutional law.  The prize was first given in 1952.

Henry Otterman Real Property Prize

This prize was established in 1933 by the bequest of Dena M. Otterman.  The prize is awarded annually to the first‐year student who attains the highest grade in Property.   

Sidney G. Stricker Prize

This prize provides an annual sum to a first‐year student who has attained a high scholastic standard and demonstrates financial need in order to purchase law books.

Thompson, Hine & Flory Advocacy Prize.  

The law firm of Thompson, Hine and Flory presents this award annually to students for excellence in appellate advocacy.

Lawrence Maxwell Memorial Prize for Advocacy

The law firm Graydon, Head & Ritchey gives this prize annually for excellence in appellate advocacy.

Paul & Ted Squillante Memorial Prize

Established by an anonymous donor in 1979, this prize is named in memory of the sons of a College of Law faculty member.  The income from the endowment is given annually to the student whose grades improve the most between the first and second semester of the first year.

Upperclass Prizes

Edward C (Ned) Blackwood, Jr. Prize

Ned Blackwood was a longtime resident of Wyoming, Ohio.  A successful businessman and community leader, he provided the inspiration and motivation for students who ultimately enjoyed successful careers in the fields of law, medicine, and dentistry.  This prize is awarded to the student attaining the highest grade in the Health Care Law course.

George A. Dornette Memorial Prize

This prize was established in 1995. This prize is awarded annually for the significant contributions made by the Chair of the Honor Council.   

George A. Dornette PR/Ethics Award

This prize is awarded to the student receiving the highest grade in the Legal Ethics course.   

John R. Sayler Prize in Evidence

This prize was established by the bequest of the Honorable John R. Sayler.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest grade in Evidence.

John R. Sayler Prize in Payment Systems

This prize was established by the bequest of the Honorable John R. Sayler.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who attains the highest grade in Payment Systems.

Judge William H. Lueders Prize

This prize was established in 1964 by Dr. William Dornette in memory of his grandfather, who was a member of the class of 1886 and Judge of the Probate Court of Hamilton County 1909‐1939.   This prize is awarded to the student receiving the highest grade in Wills, Trusts, and Future Interests.   

Professor Nora J. Lauerman Family Law Prize

This prize was established in memory of Professor Nora Jane Lauerman by her father, Henry C Lauerman, and is given to the student attaining the highest grade in the Family Law course.

Graduating Student Prizes

Order of the Barristers 

Order of the Barristers is a national honor organization that encourages oral advocacy and brief writing skills through law school appellate moot court and mock trial programs.   Selected by the members of the Moot Court Board, members of the order are those senior board members who have demonstrated outstanding ability in appellate advocacy.

Eugene M. Corbin Memorial Award  

Established in 1984 through the generosity of the family and friends of Gene Corbin, tax professor at the College of Law from 1978‐83.  The cash award is given annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated character, tenacity, and decency in fulfilling personal and school responsibilities.

Hon. Susan J. Dlott Award in Litigation  

Established in 1992 and awarded to a senior who has the highest grade point average in a selected group of courses related to litigation practice.

Judge John W. Peck Trial Practice Award

This award was established in 1979 by the Cincinnati Chapter of the Federal Bar Association in honor of Sixth Circuit Judge John W. Peck.  The prize is awarded annually to the student who achieves the best performance in the course in Trial Practice.

National Association of Women Lawyers 

Each year this award is given to an outstanding woman law graduate.  The award consists of a one‐year honorary membership in NAWL, which includes a one‐year subscription to their Law Journal.

ALI‐ABA Scholarship & Leadership Award

This award recognizes the qualities of scholarship and leadership embodied by the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association.  Recipients receive free tuition to an ALI‐ABA webcast, a one‐year subscription to the ALI‐ABA Digital Content Library, and a complimentary copy of RED FLAGS:  A LAWYER’S HANDBOOK ON LEGAL ETHICS.

Tyler Short Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence:

This award is presented annually to a graduating student who has been involved with the ECDC, where Tyler was an intern for several months before his death.  The award-winning student should also be someone who exhibits a strong entrepreneurial spirit, possesses a keen interest in advising entrepreneurs or aspires to be one, and excels in curricular and/or extracurricular activities related to the same.
