Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the JD program, students will be able to demonstrate their competency to participate in the legal profession in the following ways:

1. They will know and understand substantive and procedural law.

2. They will have competent skills in legal research, written and oral communication, legal analysis and reasoning, and problem-solving. Students will be able to:

  • research and assess sources of law, including primary and secondary sources, to identify the        weight and value of the materials and to solve legal problems;
  • express concepts clearly, logically, and concisely in writing and orally; and
  • analyze and synthesize legal information and apply legal reasoning to solve complex problems.

3. They will know and understand proper professional and ethical responsibilities to clients and the legal system. They will know and understand the rules of professional conduct. They also will appreciate the value and responsibilities of the legal profession and its members.

4. They will demonstrate other professional skills needed for competent and ethical participation as a member of the legal profession, including:

  • effective communication skills and professional judgment to collaborate effectively with clients, including effective interviewing and counseling; and
  • effective advocacy skills, including critically evaluating the needs and circumstances of clients and others and developing persuasive arguments and positions to achieve desired results and resolve legal conflicts.
